- Description: No phone, no news, no plan: a cup of coffee and the light moving across the table. What happened when I kept one hour a day for nothing at all.

For years, the first thing I touched in the morning was a screen. The news, the weather, the messages that had arrived in the night. By the time the coffee was ready, the day had already been decided by other people.

In January I tried something simple. The first hour after waking would belong to no one: not to work, not to the news, not even to a plan. Only the kettle, a cup, the window and whatever the light was doing on the table.

The first week was strange. My hand kept reaching for a phone that was charging in another room. By the second week, I noticed things I had walked past for years: the neighbour's cat on the wall at seven, the way the light reaches the bread board before it reaches the floor.

Nothing dramatic happened. I did not become a different person. But the days started a little later and a little calmer, and the hour became the part of the day I protect most fiercely.

> You do not have to fill the first hour. You only have to keep it.

If you want to try: put the phone in another room the night before, make something warm, and sit where the light comes in. That is the whole method.
