- Description: We left the plan at home and let the weather decide. It was the best decision of the year.

Every guide to the Lofoten Islands tells you to plan carefully: the ferries, the hikes, the few places to stay that are not booked a year in advance. We did the opposite. We booked a car, a first night and a last night, and left the eight days in between empty.

It turns out the islands are made for this. The weather changes every hour, and a plan made in the morning is usually wrong by noon. Without one, you follow the light.

## Let the weather decide

Each morning we looked out of the window and asked one question: where is the sky clearest? Then we drove there. Some days that meant an hour along the coast road, some days ten minutes to the next bay. Twice it meant staying in, reading, while the rain moved sideways past the window.

## Where we slept

We found rooms the way people did before booking sites: by asking. A fisherman’s widow with a spare room, a cabin owner who had just had a cancellation, a guesthouse whose owner called her cousin when she was full. None of these places had a website. All of them had a kettle and a view.

## What we ate

Fish, mostly, and very fresh: cod in every form, fish soup at a petrol station that we still talk about, cinnamon buns from a bakery that sold out by ten. In the north, lunch is the main meal, and the cafés close early.

## What we would tell a friend

- Rent a car, but leave space in the day to stop. The best views have no car park.
- Pack for four seasons. You will need all of them.
- Book the first and last nights only. Ask locally for the rest.
- Do not try to see everything. The islands are not going anywhere.

We came home with fewer photographs than we expected and far more stories. That seems like the right way round.
